Goal Setting Ideas

In December I start the process of goal setting for the new year. Here are some goal setting ideas and prompts I hope you find useful.

Some are prompts or habit suggestions to help you design your own goals. Others are set as SMART goals, or are written in positive, first person present format.

In 2018 I used the  Living Your Best Year Ever Journal by Darren Hardy. Many ideas below are borrowed from the journal or his book, The Compound Effect, others are variations of my goals and ideas.

Spiritual

  • Pray with my family every day
  • Weekly spiritual devotion with my spouse
  • Live my spiritual beliefs more faithfully
  • Daily devotions
  • Church attendance
  • Volunteer at church
  • Teach others
  • Read one spiritual book monthly
  • Read the entire Bible by 12/31/19
  • Write in a spiritual journal daily
  • Lead and be a spiritual example to my family
  • Pray for one friend every day
  • Pray for one enemy every day
  • Pray for my spouse and children every day

Family

  • My family takes two trips out of town monthly
  • I have taken an overnight trip with my spouse quarterly
  • Date night with my spouse every week
  • Increase the love and intimacy in my marriage
  • Spend 20 hours per week with my children
  • Read at least one book quarterly on marriage or parenting
  • Listen to podcasts on marriage or parenting
  • Business meeting with spouse every week
  • Relationship review with spouse every week
  • Read books with my children every night
  • Be home for dinner every night
  • Plan special outings

Business

  • I read instructional information in my field for 30 minutes daily
  • I am taking steps to become the best in the world in my field
  • Mentor someone
  • Find a mentor

Physical

  • I eat fruits and vegetables every day
  • I lift weights 5 days a week
  • I eat dessert only 1 day per week
  • Run a marathon
  • Increase energy and stamina
  • Reduce sugar, caffeine, etc.
  • Get up earlier
  • I sleep for 8 hours every night

Mental

  • Read one book summary every day
  • I have read 52 books by 12/31/19
  • I actively take notes and apply what I read
  • I read instructional information in my field for 30 minutes daily
  • I set aside time to think and plan for 2 hours per week
  • I write my thoughts and ideas weekly in a journal, notebook or blog
  • Increase knowledge in world history, science, health, math, etc
  • Advance knowledge on current and upcoming trends such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc.
  • Hire a coach
  • Schedule time to get away alone
  • Take new classes or learn on Khan Academy
  • Attend a conference or seminar
  • Write 10 ideas a day

Lifestyle

  • Take at least one trip out of state
  • Take at least one trip out of country
  • Visit 10 new cities by 12/31/19
  • Eat at 12 new restaurants

Relationships

  • Write one note per month to a friend
  • Develop relationships with like minded high performers
  • Have a weekly phone call with a peak performance partner
  • Dinner with friends once per month
  • Encourage my friends
  • Be a better friend
  • Connect with new people
  • Reach out to new people I respect and admire
  • Write letters of gratitude
  • Call or text one friend every day
  • Send birthday cards to friends
  • Relationships to eliminate or limit
